Student Achievements

Students at Laurence are encouraged to achieve their highest potential academically and otherwise, always striving for their personal best.
Aside from the excitement of receiving awards and accolades, our students learn the satisfaction of working hard to accomplish goals and rising to the occasion when challenged.
Recent Achievements
Math
OC Math Circle Thanksgiving Tournament
Our 6th grade team won 1ar place, the 4th grade team won 2nd place, and four Laurence students placed in the top ten for the individual rounds.
OC All Girls Math Competition
Girls on our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teams competed with 4th grade placing 2nd in the team round, and one of our 6th graders placing 1ar in the individual round.
Laurence School Invitational Math Tournament
Several years ago, Laurence School created this tournament, led by our math specialists and coaches. Schools from throughout Los Angeles participate each year. At a recent tournament, Laurence teams took 1st and 2nd place in the 6th Grade and 4th/5th Grade divisions. In the individual rounds, Laurence students took 1st and 2nd place in the 6th Grade division and 1st through 3rd place in the 4th/5th Grade division.
Chess
National Elementary Chess Championships
Eleven players competed in the most recent National Elementary Chess Championships in Nashville, Tennessee with great success. Our K5U900 team earned 21st place out of 68 teams in the nation and 347 kids in the section. One of our 3rd Graders tied for 30th out of 310 players in the nation in his K-3 section, and one of our 1st Graders came in 6th out of 68 players in the K1 section. Our 1st Grade team of two players, came in 11th out of 25 in the nation - an unheard of result when you have less than 4 players on a team!
Southern California State Chess Championships
The Chess Mates, our competitive chess team, took third in the K-3 Under 600 Schools Sections, with one student taking ninth place out of 128 players.
Language Arts
Published Poetry
Thirdy Laurence Students were featured in a recent edition of A Celebration of Poets, a national anthology of poetry written by children in kindergarten through 6th grade. The poems were chosen from among thousands of entries.
National WordMasters Challenge
Our 4th graders placed second for the cumulative year-end result of the WordMasters Challenge, earning a total score of 557 out of a possible 600 during three challenges in this national competition testing students' analytical skills and vocabulary acumen.
ERBs
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
Eight-four percent of our 3rd through 5th grade students qualified for this high honor, including 94% of our 5th graders, receiving a nationally-normed score in the 95th percentile or higher on the math and/or verbal section of the ERB test.
Science
Elementary Science Olympiad Invitational
Several 4th grade students participated in this competition, which featured a combination of eight different hands-on, science-based events. Out of 175 participants, Laurence students finished in 1st and 3rd place.
