How We Choose Educational Apps
How We Choose Educational Apps

Dear Parents,
Laurence School is committed to using technology in responsible and innovative ways to enhance and support student learning.  We carefully assess the resources to ensure that they are developmentally appropriate, follow best practices in safeguarding student privacy, and are a good match for our curriculum. Throughout the year, we will be using resources that may require your child to have an account on an app, a website, or a program.
In order for our students to use these programs and services, certain basic personal identifying information – generally the student's name, username, school email address – must be provided to the website operator.  Access to these websites and resources is monitored by the teacher using the resource.
Under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), these websites must notify parents and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13.  However, the law permits schools such as Laurence to consent to the collection of basic personal information on behalf of all of its families, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to each website provider.

We maintain a Google Sheet, which is available for your review, listing the educational technology resources that require unique logins for our students and their corresponding privacy policies. Your child(ren) may have access to some or all of these apps throughout the 2018-2019 school year.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
