Chess Mates Rock at the Off Da Rook Chess Tournament
Chess Mates Rock at the Off Da Rook Chess Tournament

By Robert Romano, 3rd Grade Teacher & Chess Coach

Half a dozen of our Laurence Chess Mates participated in the Off Da Rook Scholastic Chess Championship in West Hills on Sunday, January 6th. Wesley W. from Kindergarten, Isabella B. from 1st Grade, and Amira P., Calvin K., Mae Mae G. and Hudson B. from 4th Grade all played four games over five hours.  It was Wesley W. and Isabella B.'s first tournament ever, and they played like the Laurence champions they are! Calvin K. placed 4th in his very difficult K-8 Under 1000 section, taking home a trophy.  We would like to give a special shout out to the parents who all spent the entire day supporting their children and waiting patiently while their child fought hard for victory.  Our next tournament is on February 10th in Glendale.  Good luck Chess Mates!
