By Sabrina Crame, 2nd Grade Teacher
In conjunction with Black History Month and our American Heroes unit in Social Studies, 2nd graders are doing an author and illustrator study of the award-winning Pinkney Family with an emphasis on Jerry Pinkney. Jerry overcame dyslexia and discrimination especially as he applied to art school to become one of America's most admired children's book illustrators. He featured Black main characters and diverse themes at a time when hardly any children's books did. We are reading stories including Goin' Someplace Special, The Patchwork Quilt, The Talking Eggs, and Duke Ellington.
