Our 3rd graders were introduced to the work of Keith Haring, and took inspiration from his graffiti art style, bright colors, and the symbols and messages he used. They practiced creating the simple human figure outlines that Haring loved, and we discussed in detail Haring's use of lines and shapes to indicate movements and sound. Next, we talked about this year's character education theme and the different ways to be kind ("kind to oneself, kind to others, and kind to the Earth"). Students were encouraged to come up with kindness stories to tell through their images. They created sweet and fun drawings, which they painted using bright Haring-inspired colors. When finished, these works of art will be displayed around the campus to remind everyone to Keep Kind in Mind!
