A Rockin' Start to the School Year
A Rockin' Start to the School Year

It's so exciting to be back into the swing of the school year - I can hardly believe it has already been a month! 2018-2019 is off to a great start – this summer, we received positive commendations from the California Association of Independent Schools, along with a 7-year accreditation term, the longest term available.  This month, we also published our new strategic plan, which will guide the future of Laurence over the next five years.
There are several curricular initiatives that we will be delving deeper into this school year: student engagement; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and personal presentation skills, including public speaking. I am excited to share details throughout the year, but today I want to focus on student engagement.
Last week, we celebrated Rock Your School Day, a worldwide movement where thousands of educators crafted creative and innovative lessons to deliver substantive content in a way that engaged students fully in the learning experience. Laurence was selected by the leaders of the this movement as the host of the day, and broadcast all day from our campus. We were thrilled to have been selected to host, which gave our school a chance to demonstrate our longtime emphasis on engaging students through fun and collaborative projects, finding multiple ways for each student to meaningfully connect with his or her learning experience. In fact, that's why one of our "Total Child" Values is Love of Learning!
Our day began with a special RWB&G Assembly that was broadcast via Facebook Live.  Our own faculty band, Victory at Woodman, set the tone for the day with a rock performance, followed by a high energy whole-school dance led by Ms. Lampkin, as well as red carpet interviews with students, parents, and me, too! (See the video clip below.) Throughout the day, teachers at every grade level created new experiential learning activities that included mystery math cases, relay race science lessons, pet rock character creation and animation, and an "airplane" trip and visit to China. This was an inspirational day for our teachers and students, and a wonderful way to kick off the school year with lots of Laurence spirit!
It is going to be our best year yet!
