Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Director of Curriculum
Christina Rios
Christina Rios has been a member of the Laurence School family since 2009. Prior to working in her current role, she taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade at Laurence. She also led the faculty Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (“DEI”) committee that was created during the 2019-2020 school year.
Christina’s interest in teaching began when she was studying to receive a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Education Studies from UCSD. While earning this degree, she spent time in numerous schools in the San Diego area, and developed a passion for creating inclusive learning environments and celebrating the unique identities of each student while working in an elementary school classroom in National City. Her passion and commitment to DEI deepened during her social justice education at UCLA, where she earned a Master’s in Education and Teaching Credential from the Teacher Education Program, and had the opportunity to work with 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders while student teaching. As Dr. Gholdy E. Muhammad, author of Cultivating Genius, says, “It is our job as educators to not just teach skills, but also to teach students to know, validate, and celebrate who they are.”
When Christina is not at Laurence, she enjoys living an active lifestyle, which includes hiking, running, or cycling. More importantly, her free time is spent with her husband, Jason, and daughter, Naia.
