Dear Laurence Families,

What a pleasure it was to kick off the 2021-2022 school year on September 1st!  Our beautiful campus is once again in bloom with the joy of students’ laughter and the magical interaction among students and teachers.

Like all of you, I wish that COVID-19 was behind us, and we could safely resume living our pre-pandemic lives. Unfortunately, we are not there yet. Laurence is dedicated to continuing to implement health and safety protocols on our campus to realize this goal, including weekly testing of all students and staff through at least the month of September. Laurence’s overarching goal is to safely keep our campus open for in-person instruction.

Achieving the goal of consistent on-campus instruction, however, requires our entire community working together inside and outside of school to engage in behavior that minimizes the risk of COVID-19 transmission. As we head into the four-day holiday weekend and beyond, I strongly encourage you to consider the following:

Social Gatherings/Parties:
Due to the current high community transmission rate, limit gatherings/parties to small groups, wear masks when indoors and consider wearing masks when outdoors during these gatherings. Whenever possible, hold gatherings outdoors, where the risk of transmission is greatly reduced.

The CDC and LA County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) recommend that unvaccinated individuals not travel over the long weekend, and limit all travel at this time. LACDPH recommends that unvaccinated travelers quarantine (7 days with a test on day 3-4, or 10 days without a test) following out of state travel. Laurence School aligns with the LACDPH and CDC guidelines for domestic travel, which can be found here: CDC Domestic Travel Recommendations. If you are traveling internationally, please reference the CDC International Travel Recommendations and Requirements

Finally, I want to shed light on the circumstances under which LACDPH requires a student to quarantine at home. If a student or staff member tests positive, they must generally quarantine at home for ten days after the positive test, even without symptoms.  In addition, Laurence School, in partnership with the LACDPH, must trace back 48 hours from the date of the positive test (or onset of symptoms) and determine which students/staff were a “close contact” of the positive case. A “close contact” is defined as someone who has been within 6 feet of a confirmed positive COVID-19 case for a total of 15+ minutes over a 24-hour period (whether masked or unmasked).

Unvaccinated individuals who are “close contacts” must also be quarantined and cannot come to school for 10 days (or 7 days if the close contact is not experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, and they receive a negative PCR test taken after day 5).  For more information, please review the COVID-19 Exposure Management Plan Guidance in TK-12 Schools

Currently, Laurence School, like many other schools, is not offering a fully-immersive hybrid program for those quarantining due to COVID-19. We will, however, be doing everything we can to minimize any disruption to in-person learning.

Laurence’s close-knit community is near and dear to my heart. I cherish the face-to-face human connection that makes Laurence a truly special place. I thank you for honoring our mutual commitment and partnership to work collaboratively to keep our campus safe and open for in-person instruction.
