Dear Laurence Families,
I hope that you and your family are safe and healthy, and finding ways to enjoy the summer months. Yesterday, Governor Newsom announced new mandates for both public and private schools regarding opening this fall. A school will be allowed to open for in-person learning when the county in which it is located has been off the state's monitoring list (which tracks positive COVID tests, hospitalization rates and capacities) for 14 consecutive days. If this requirement is not met, schools may only reopen remotely. Los Angeles County is currently on the monitoring list, however, the start of our school year is still weeks away. While we are hopeful that things might change and LA County could turn their numbers around, we will be watching the situation in our county closely, with the health and safety of our students, families, faculty, and staff as our top priority.
Like all of you, I share in your frustration at the lack of certainty about how school will start this fall. Given the rapidly evolving situation, we continue to prepare for both in-person and fully remote scenarios. Our academic directors and faculty are preparing for full remote learning with thoughtfulness and supplemental professional development to deliver an engaging and academically rigorous remote program. When the situation in our county improves, we will be ready to return students to campus in accordance with state and county health and safety requirements, including physical distancing, masks, daily health screenings, testing of our employees, and increased hygiene and disinfecting procedures. Through it all, we will be focused on the emotional well-being of our students.
We will continue to communicate with you and keep you updated regarding our thinking and plans as we move forward. Please join us this Wednesday, July 22nd at 5:30 p.m. for our parent webinar. We will further discuss our plans for the fall, and our medical task force will be there to answer your questions. After the webinar, we will be sending out a parent survey to garner your comments regarding our plans for the new school year.
I am grateful for your support, flexibility and partnership as we work to create the best possible experience for your children, regardless of our world's circumstances. As always, I work hard to hold on to optimism, and my hope is that you will too.
Please stay safe and healthy - and wear your masks - so that we can get your children back to school!
