Laurence School’s lush, green campus is adorned with a wide variety of unique and beautiful ecosystems. The exploration, investigation, and understanding of the school’s rich natural environment provide the inspiration for the theme-based school-wide kindergarten-6th grade sustainable gardening program. During a primary and upper grade fall planting day, students experience a meaningful connection with nature as they plant a variety of edible herbs and vegetables into theme-based areas and participate in several science-related hands-on learning centers. Upper grade students assume the responsibility of organizing and coordinating the planting day activities. As an important facet of the science curriculum, throughout the school year students regularly visit and interact with the surrounding gardens and ecosystems, nurture the herbs and vegetables they planted, and engage in hands-on gardening experiences. Ultimately, students harvest the edible plants from their gardens and create a rich array of products from the garden’s harvest. This cycle of life culminates in a full-fledged Farmers’ Market on campus in which students sell the “fruits of their labor” during our Spring Open House. The proceeds from the Farmers’ Market are donated to help sustain the school’s gardens and rich ecosystems and to support an environmental organization of the students’ choosing.
