From Kindergarten to fourth grade, the children enjoy conversing in Spanish. We look at the learning of Spanish as much more than learning words and phrases. At Laurence, learning Spanish means learning new ideas, how others around the world think and live, what has made them the people they are, their customs, songs, dances, crafts and cuisine. Some of the ways we have looked at our Spanish speaking world this year are projects that involve creating calacas for Día de los Muertos, ojos de Dios, Guatemalan paper plates designs depicting nature, Mayan and Aztec pictorial animal codices, reading bilingual stories and folktales about Navidad, Las Posadas and Día de Reyes , studying and conversing about notable multicultural peace figures, singing Spanish songs and integrating the curriculum in some of the everyday classroom teachings, whether it is discussing the Costa Rican rain forest, global warming or our solar system. At Laurence, starting in 1st grade, all of the classrooms have SmartBoards; this has enabled me to make my lessons more interactive, creative and fun!
