As Sixth grade students approach the challenge of entering secondary school, they work on refining their time management and study skills, enhance their higher level critical and creative thinking skills, and develop greater independence and responsibility for monitoring their overall growth and development. A stimulating and challenging program helps facilitate students’ transition to a secondary school environment.
The Reading program incorporates themes from social studies and science through novels, short stories, and poetry. Students further refine their ability to read critically and to develop greater aptitude in the inferential interpretation of a wide variety of genres. Students learn to use active reading techniques and interact with the text by making predictions, connecting with characters, plot, or conflicts, determining an author’s intent, and studying key story elements.
Students refine the content, clarity, and mechanics of their Writing through a variety of both expository and narrative experiences. An emphasis is placed upon writing structured, coherent expository 5-paragraph essays. Students learn to organize their information using techniques learned in the Step-Up-To-Writing Program. They self-assess their written assignments using rubrics. Students learn to engage in independent research, extrapolate information from a variety of sources, take notes, create outlines, and create a bibliography that leads to the writing of major reports. Developing the ability to engage in independent research and refine organizational and study skills provides sixth graders with the foundation for success in secondary school and beyond.
The Mathematics program provides an extensive review of whole number operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, and geometry. Accelerated students explore pre-algebra and linear and algebraic equations. Mathematical concepts and problem solving skills are reinforced through practical application to real-world experiences.
In Social Studies, through the interactive, on-line program, sixth grade students explore world cultures, focusing on the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, China, India, and Rome. Students enhance their understanding of Brotherhood and the interdependence of people through the study of Global Education and the school’s character education and community service programs. Sixth grade students serve as wonderful ambassadors to physically-challenged students from a local public school program.
The Science program provides many hands-on experiences and culminates in a wonderful 3-day, 2-night environmentally-themed trip. During the school year, students engage in daily exploration of many units of study, including plant and animal cells, body systems, archaeology, the topography and surface of our earth, matter, robotics and machinery, and thermal energy. The new on-line curriculum helps bridge work at school to home.
