The Kindergarten program
is a joyful transition from nursery school to a full day of meaningful learning experiences. Our Personalized Developmental Curriculum is designed to meet the unique needs of children and enables them to progress at their own pace. Parents share their amazement at how quickly their children adapt to the challenges of a stimulating and enriched learning environment.

Reading readiness is taught in small flexible ability groupings through a multi-sensory, developmental curriculum that focuses upon phonics, the acquisition of sight words, and a variety of language experiences. The program includes the regular use of emergent readers, literature, poetry, chart stories, storytelling, and individualized journal writing. As topics are explored, students have opportunities to contribute to class-created books. Students dictate their ideas and stories to the classroom teachers and draw accompanying pictures. The literacy center encourages students to participate in a variety of hands-on, self-directed activities and developmental learning games which are designed to reinforce and enhance their beginning reading, spelling, and writing skills.

Mathematics is taught in small flexible ability groups which carefully consider each child’s readiness level. The foundation of mathematical thinking is laid at both the conceptual and computational level. These skills are fostered through direct hands-on interaction with manipulatives (Stern Blocks, counters, games, seasonal math) and math in the students’ everyday world. In addition, children engage in learning computation strategies and simple problem solving related to addition and subtraction facts, time, money, graphing, patterning, geometric shapes, and measurement.

Social Studies allows children to begin to expand their understanding of people in their environment from self to family, to school, to community, and to country. Citizenship, heroes, and seasonal holidays are often the focus of classroom lessons. Students also learn basic map skills. Children participate in Brotherhood Performances on Americana, Peace, Multiculturalism, and Environmental Education. Our nationally acclaimed character education and community service programs promote responsibility, cooperation, and respect for others. As they lead the school-wide Toy Drive for underprivileged children, our students have a meaningful experience in caring and sharing.

The Science program encourages children to become “young scientists” eager to explore the world around them. Units of study include using the Five Senses, Living Things: Animals and Plants, Weather, Seasons, and Oceanography. Through the school-wide theme “Earth Day, Every Day: Go Global, Go Green,” children begin to build responsibility and awareness of ways to keep the Earth healthy. Our fully equipped indoor science lab and outdoor gardens and ecosystems provide a unique setting for hands-on experiments to foster young children’s natural curiosity, scientific inquiry, and provide opportunities for the care of animals and plants. The kindergarten boasts a brand-new, interactive on-line science curriculum which is helpful to both teachers and students in the classroom and families at home.
