The Fourth Grade Reading program continues to challenge students to expand their ability to think inferentially, to broaden their vocabulary, and to more fully develop independent reading skills in flexible ability groups. Important comprehension skills include identifying the main idea and supporting details, sequencing, predicting, comparing and contrasting, and connecting subject matter to the students’ everyday environment. Students read a variety of literature connected to social studies themes. Fourth graders refine their understanding of analogies, verbal reasoning, and mechanics. In addition, students have a spelling program that emphasizes dictation and carry-over to daily writing.
The Writing program is integrated throughout the curriculum and includes multiple-paragraph essays, information reports, book reports, poetry, journals, and narratives. Increasing emphasis is placed upon written expression as a means to explore and communicate a variety of experien-ces. Students practice expository writing skills on themes including holidays, community service, the environment, and peace. Teachers serve as models for students by sharing their personal narratives and written compositions. Organizational and study skills are further emphasized to prepare students for their transition to the upper elementary grades.
In Mathematics, students enhance their understanding of the connection between mathematical concepts and real-life experiences through current events and a variety of problem-solving activities. In flexible learning groups, the young mathematicians augment their conceptual understanding, become more adept at computation, and practice being thoughtful, accurate problem solvers in flexible learning groups. Skills covered include multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, probability, algebraic thinking, and multiple-step problem solving.
In Social Studies, through the interactive, on-line program, students study California history from the earliest Native Americans to contemporary times. Explorers, missions, ranchos, the Gold Rush, statehood, geography, state government, agriculture, and urban California are topics studied in the fourth grade. Students expand their understanding of brotherhood through the study of Americana. They learn about the interdependence of people and cultures through Global Education by comparing life in a sister country with our own customs. Fourth graders also benefit from character education and community service programs.
The Science curriculum features in-depth studies of water and agriculture in California. A highlight of the unit includes a trip into the Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu Creek State Park. Students participate in an extensive, hands-on field study of the different biomes found in the canyons and survey water samples throughout the creek beds. Children learn the importance of water conservation as it relates to agriculture and biomes and use “A Child’s Place in the Environment” to connect their science studies with literature and art. Many hands-on experiences in our fully equipped, state-of-the-art science lab help enrich the learning as fourth grade students explore electricity and magnetism.
