Expanding Our "Circle of Concern" to Build Empathy

By Laurie Wolke

At Laurence, we celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week with special activities designed to help students focus on the many ways to be kind.

This past fall, Harvard Professor and psychologist Richard Weissbourd, co-director of the Making Caring Common Project, spoke to our parents about raising kind and caring children. One key take-away that has been particularly inspiring to me is the concept of expanding our students' (and our own) "Circle of Concern."

Spotlight on 3rd Grade Science

In Science, our 3rd Graders have been learning about the human body. They were fortunate enough to be visited by Dr. Abdulian, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and dad to Alexia and Alene, who are in Kindergarten and 3rd Grade. During his visit, the students created their own model skeletons using popsicle sticks, cardboard, paper, paperclips, and tape. Thank you to Dr. Abdulian for spending time with our 3rd Grade class. Random Acts of Kindness Week

February is a time for celebrating friendship and kindness. This month our students will be taking part in school-wide activities and events that inspire and reinforce these positive feelings. Random Acts of Kindness week begins on February 13th. During this week, the teachers are planning on "catching" the students being kind and celebrating these important acts. After all, it is the daily, small courtesies and considerations we can bestow on others that make the biggest difference in our community and world. We hope to inspire the children to know how much they are cared for, encouraged, and supported by their friends.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day and Random Acts of Kindness week, we will be having a very special spirit dress day next Tuesday, February 14th. To participate in the spirit day, all students and staff should wear a red, pink, or white shirt with school appropriate jeans. Students also have the choice of wearing their regular Laurence Uniform. Let's all show our support, spirit of kindness and Represent the "L" on this very special day.
